12 Natural Preservatives Found In Our Kitchen

A preservative is a chemical substance which is added to food beverages, pharmaceutical drugs, paints, biological samples etc. to prevent unwanted chemical changes from taking place with them or in simpler words to preserve them. Preservative is a food additive that prevents food items from getting spoiled and thus we need it but why to purchase preservatives when we have them at home? Your kitchen spices can act as good food preservatives and if you are still doubtful how ingredients from your kitchen can act as food preservatives, you should surely read the following:-

1. Cinnamon to inhibit oxidation of chips:-
Cinnamon or dalcheeni is a specialist of oxidation in the sense that it is rich in the content of antioxidants which prevent or inhibit the process of oxidation. Cinnamon can thus be added as a preservative while making consumables like cheese balls, chips etc. Bread that is added with cinnamon while making never goes moldy easily. You can sprinkle some cinnamon powder in your bread packet to preserve it for long.

2. Cloves as a Natural Preservative:-
Cloves are commonly used as a kitchen spice but they are rich in antimicrobial and antibacterial properties which makes them a really good preservative for fungal and bacterial growths. Cloves prevent a food item from getting spoiled because of these spoilers besides adding a sweet and aromatic flavor to these dishes. Cloves act as natural antioxidants and thus they help in the prevention of food spoilage.

3. Oregano as a Warm Flavoring Agent:-
Oregano is an herb which can be used as a preservative for meats and other such consumables because of its balsamic warm flavor. It rather also prevents food items from getting spoiled because of oxidation and has antibacterial and antifungal properties in it to prevent bacterial or fungal growth. Oregano is proven also to reduce the ability of bacteria to form toxins and thus it is a better preservative for food items.

4. Sage as a Food Preserver:-
Sage is the best preservative for preserving meats, cheese, sausages etc. if used in mild or controlled amounts. Sage is also rich in antibacterial properties which help it to prevent the growth of microbes in such food items. Sage makes best pairing with cheese. It prevents the growth of harmful bacteria in meat.

5. Thyme as a Food Decay Specialist:-
Thyme is a food decay specialist in a way that it prevents food items from getting
decayed by preventing the process of oxidation. Thyme is also a natural flavoring agent for most food items. Thyme has antimicrobial and anti-mycotic properties in it which make it one of the best preservatives ever.

6. Salt to remove moisture:-
Salt when added to any food item helps to remove the content of water from it. Salt absorbs water and keeps the food dry.  Dry environment doesn’t supports bacterial growth and hence salt helps in reducing the bacterial growth acting as a natural preservative for your food. You can use salt as a preservative for meat, fish and other such food items. Salt is also used while making pickles because of the same property.

7.Sugar As A Flavor And Preservative:-
Besides salt, sugar is also one of the natural preservatives that removes content of water from any food item keeping it dried and hence reducing the number of bacteria in any food item. Sugar is both, a food flavor as well as a preservative. Sugar is also added in food products like amla murabba, jams, jellies, fruit butters etc. because of the same reason.

8. Lemon Juice as a Food Preservant:-
Just like salt and sugar, lemon juice also draws out the water content from any food item. It rather also balances the pH of natural acids in food. Lemon juice is used in beverages, cosmetics and pharmacy products as a preservative and flavoring agent both.

9. Vinegar as an Enemy for Microbes:-
Vinegar is a product of fermentation of sugar and water solutions. It is proven to kill the microbes and thus to prevent food from getting spoiled. Vinegar is used as a preservative while making pickles, seasoned hamburger and sausages. It is also used as a flavoring agent besides being used as a preservative.

10. Rosemary Extract to Reduce Oxidation Process:-
Rosemary extract or Rosemary oil is a natural antioxidant and thus when we talk about the elimination of extra oxygen from food products or the elimination of microbes, fungi and other such food spoiling agents from a food item, we talk about adding preservatives like Rosemary oil to the food items.

11. Citric Acid for processed foods:-
Citric Acid is an organic acid that can be bought in use as a natural preservative for processed food items. It is also used as a flavoring agent and emulsifying agent. This acid is weak in its concentration and thus it prevents the food from getting spoiled besides keeping its pH balanced. It is also added in food items as a flavoring agent to impart sour flavor to them.

12. Vitamin-E as A Food Preservative:-
Vitamin-E capsules these days are being used as preservatives for food items. Vitamin-E is actually high in the content of antioxidants and thus like rosemary extract, it also helps to eliminate extra oxygen from any food item. You can spray it on food items to delay the growth of bacteria in any specific food item.
Though Vitamin-E is actually not a preservative but the presence of preservatives makes it the best for health.
